    Default Brainiac Stuff...

    Brainiac Stuff.

Here's an impossible task. Youre supposed to draw a (single) line that crosses all the lines which connect two points (there's 16 of them), without crossing the same one twice.

I've been trying to solve this one for a loooooooong time - AND NOTHING!

So I thought that someone on this forum might have the answer.

a friend told me. it's one of the most difficult ones of the logical problems. he also mentioned that the solution is kept in a museum, somewhere in england :-)

Oh, and one more thing. I've sent the same problem to a bunch of friends and they came up with an invalid solution.

    here it is

the 'thread' has to CROSS THE LINE. It has to come in on one side and out on the other - NOT GO OVER IT. Just wanted to prevent any more peps from wasting time if I wasn't clear enough :-)

ONCE AGAIN, (hopefully the last time). cross all the nubered "goals" ONCE (not twice+) with a single thread. It doesnt matter if you cross the thread 0 or 111 times. It's only important not to cross any of the numbered goals more and less than once. Do not go along the goal lines. Do not go through a dot which limits a goal.

Btw, where did you find more than 16 of them?

I must be doing something wrong, because I did it and it seemed really easy. I don't know how to post, so if anyone wants the pic, just msg me.

... no, this can't be right.

You can post through remote servers (I use Tiny Pic). Just upload the image there and paste the image link.

You could be right... I think that this is just one of those problems that you solve on "BOOM". Either you know the answer from the first time you see it, or you wont get it no matter how long you try. Could be wrong though.

To specify the stuff i did additionally would be like specifying that your RPG character with the Dexterity of 3, can't dodge arrows with with fingers. LOL.

No, Ouroboros, I don't thik You got it right. Sorry.

    To the others:

OK, now... This is my FINAL ATTEMPT ("Final Attempt" is a registered copyright of the "Try Again Corporation". Violators will endure consequences ), before I accept ForrestBlack's solution as the valid one (and only cause he has such a exquisite colour choice)

Connect the RED lines into a single thread.
    Don't cross anything.
    Just connect them.
That's what I was trying to explain all the time.

Same shit as before, except I hope I was more accurate this time :-)

    (am I that confusing?)
Or, no wait, don't anwer that one. LOL.

pretty sure this is mathematically impossible; someone who knows their geometry should write a proof. I think it has to do with the fact that there are 9 lines on the outside meaning to cross all of them you need to have one end start on the inside and the other on the outside, but with one end starting on the outside you can't cross all the inside lines

P.S. I've been trying for over an year now... giving up. trying again. giving up. trying again. etc...

    .

Your first set of rules were "Youre supposed to draw a (single) line that crosses all the lines which connect two points (there's 16 of them), without crossing the same one twice."

According to the challenge, I would say that my effort was not as wrong as it gets. According to the modified rules, yeah, sure, I accept that. On the otherhand, you said it was impossible, so I'm not sure what the motivation is to embark on a futile task. I'll just trust that you are honest in what you say. Why would you lie to us, right?

naw, cuz you can't cross the same line/ portal/goal thing twice. best i've been able to do was all but one line crossed.

    Default Re: Brainiac Stuff...

I joined the forum exclusively because I wanted to figure out an answer to this (I can't resist a good riddle), but maybe I'll fill a profile out later and come by after this too (unless I'm banned for posting URLs).

Three of the boxes have five lines one has to cross - these are labeled Five-Cross A through C. Two of the boxes have only four lines you have to cross, like a normal box. These are Four-Cross A and Four-Cross B.

    Diagram of this at geocities[period]com[slash]shevtheprof[slash]diagrambox.jpg
(I couldn't write that out 'cause of rules.)

It's impossible to do this on a planar surface with a single thread if you leave the whole thing intact because of the five-cross boxes - they make a shape (the purplish lines) that requires the thread to make five crossings per box (an odd number) when the actual number of crosses allowed is only twelve (an even number). The riddle's tricky because it gives Four-Cross A and Four-Cross B as a distraction.

It IS possible to do this on a non-planar surface, though. ;D

Draw it on a donut instead:

    geocities[period]com[slash]shevtheprof[slash]donutsolution[period]jpg

See how the lines are all drawn around the hole? Take advantage of that by drawing the thread AROUND the donut (it's behind the donut when the line is dotted) and it won't actually cross any lines twice since the thread is on the other side of our 3D torus. It gets where it needs to be, and no rules are broken... unlike my thing with the pictures before I'm allowed to post.
