    Default renaissance/medieval clothing

i really love clothing from medieval times.
    does anyone else?

i am currently working on a dress for my prom thats coming up this spring. and for Robert Burns suppers in the area (my dad does the 'address to the haggis' and he wants me to be Mary Queen of Scots for the Royal March).

its a long way in coming, but when i finish i will probably post some pics.

i was also wondering if anyone knew what type of footwear would be appropriate for the era for going to a formal event...i've only really looked at dresses, never at the footwear and want to be as authentic as possible.

We have a regular medieval market here every September with all the participants dressing up in the manner of the 16th century, plus a lot of medieval music groups and concerts / theatre groups. I could almost feel at home here.

I don't mind medieval-lloking clothes, as long as they're worn somewhere proper. Like, say, a Rennaisance fair.
    It's medieval-sounding music I can't stand!

with footwear keep one thing in mind , that making shoes is not that easy , especially if you want good shoes, I've found the best thing to do is to buy some nice thick leather and make them yourself, if you dont like them at first then adjust them to something better, the problem is while the clothes show up nice and big in the pictures and whatnot the shoes are just a little part of it

if the dress is long enough the shoes won't matter but usually nothing open toe or strappy ... something that covers the whole foot and possibly the ankle will work better depending on the dress or such you can usually find cheap shoes that look like something a traditional halloween witch would wear and that could work again depending on the dress...

or you can just stop by your library and look up some medievil stuff.

and i love a good old fashioned irish kilt... ahh i need to wear my kilt more often.

You are sewing it yourself? How cool? I used to be a seamstress and worked for clothing designers. I love medieval clothing. Be sure to post a pic when you are finished. Here in NYC we used to do a lot of fashion shows, some of it was very renaissance/medieval, it was so much fun, we each played an historical female!

Shoes, that's a tough one, pretty little ballet slippers would be nice, although maybe not historically correct...

yep, i have it all cut out. i knew it was gonna be a big project when i decided to do. i only learned how to sew last feb through a fashion class i got stuck in at skewl, so i'm a tad nervous that i'm gonna destroy almost $150 worth of fabric.

but i cant really afford to go out a buy a medivial dress, i looked in some shops in montreal and the cheapest i could find was $500.

i will definately post pics, it should turn out great....its gonna be really dark purple with gold trim.

It sounds really pretty.. Purple with gold. Just follow the directions... I know it is a bit scary cutting into expensive fabric.

    PaulCat.

i went to fergus highland games this summer (the local pipe band was competing and my bro and dad are in it), they have all these booths with tons of medivial and old scottish style clothing.

there was one booth that specialized in chainmale clothing, they had an awsome dress with a choker and head peice, i wanted to buy it for semi-formal but it was a couple grand...

hmm....might have to take up chainmale clothing as a hobby.....

So tell us more about the Robert Burns dinner and the Royal March! How cool!!! This is why I wish I lived over there.

Is it in a castle? Your dad sounds really interesting.

I used to sit with a pair of pliers and kind of knit chainmail while hanging out with friends or in front of MTV

its definately not in a castle, there accually no castles where i live (i'm from canada), Robert Burns was a very celebrated poet in Scotland in the 1700's. Robert Burns night is a celebration of his poetry and his songs (a very well known one is Auld Lang Sine, more commonly known as the new years eve song). the address to the haggis is the recital of his poem by the same title, it is acted out by cutting open an accual haggis, a very delicious dish. my dad can be very convincing he gets right into complete with accent, i've accually been asked if i'm from scotland.

if u want to read some of his poems i have some on my site, the address to the haggis and address to a deil (in modern english 'address to a devil).

the royal march is kind of like a dance, its part of the opening ceremony. one person plays Mary Queen of Scots and some one else plays her escort and some times she has maidens who follow her.

u start off in pairs and walk (march) around the room, then join into four, eights and than sixteens, than back to eight, four and two.

theres a few other traditional dances later in the night, like strip the willow and the gay, its a whole lotta fun, cuz theres one guy who has been in the pipe band for years and is from scotland who always teaches the dances, me and dad have been going for years (its kinda tradition for us to go together) so we know all the dances, and larry always gets us to show how its done.

i found a few patterns, i think i'm just gonna get some black leather or purple to match the dress and use the patterns for slippers that i have and put something on the bottom so i dont slip
