Essentially I'm producing them to act as a form of entertainment, but by doing so, I'm also making them turn out better than what I would consider to be art.Originally Posted by episode allah
I think you should reconsider your definition of art. What you describe I would probably call 'artistic genius' myself.
But then it would be a little presumptuous of me to flat-out tell you my definition of art is correct...
I probably shouldn't say this, since I'm considered to be a 'genius', but in saying that, don't you actually elevate the idiot above the genius? After all, what benefit is there in not being able to appreciate something?Originally Posted by episode allah

I'll post some of my 'artistic endeavors' in a second, gotta rustle up some links and stuff maybe. Plus I didn't want to put my two-cents on the topic after my piggy-bank of rantation on other people's conversations...
All of the above is just fucking cool.
I was reminded of "How angels get their wings" when I saw the puppets.
This is my latest product design (work in progress) in my favourite medium, vector art...
I think the typography is going to be problematic, but it's going to be on a t-shirt that says, "Black-hearted, two-faced, lying cheetah."
Might put the text in a block on the back...
But I do a lot of different art forms... DIY customizing basically all my clothes, jewelery making (like to try something a little more professional looking sometime), poetry, dancing, singing (still working on the whole musical talent thing), short-stories, drawing on people (human skin is the best canvas)...
In fact, I have a poem about drawing on people somewhere...
Looks like I'll have to dig that up later, explorer just crashed on me. <.<
I have a reputation for writing about strange topics too...
Anyway, if anyone wants to check out my stuff: http://vexbeast.deviantart.com
Or... -Gasp!- even buy my designs (please) at: http://www.zazzle.com/vexbeast*
Found the poem I was looking for...
Distinguishing
The lid falls slowly to the ground,
Unaware of the way it's callously disregarded,
As my eyes perhaps show -
But a simple glimmer of excitement.
A shifting scent of toxicity wafts -
From the fine black point of felt,
Too noxious to be enjoyed, and yet -
Just noxious enough to be pleasantly dizzying.
I slide my hand across your skin,
Like dry-ice on a marble floor,
It's streak leaving you marked, labelled, mine,
With such regard, to leave you untarnished.
Now you are complete, my precious canvas.
Kinda makes me wonder why I'm sharing such a crappy poem though. o.o
I'll find something better...
For those who are friends of Schroedinger's cat.
Black Box Of Paradox
There was a guy who was so sly he chose -
To show that the macroscopic denies those -
Who believe it malleable, by saying, "I suppose -
It takes more than a particle, for a cat to superpose."
DIY is an awesome principle. Trying your hands at a task you know little of may seem daunting in advance, but learning a basic level of many different practises, materials and mechanics is actually very satisfying, and cross-referencing a variety of such skills allows you to come up with creative ideas and solutions that you otherwise just wouldn't think of.Originally Posted by Vexbeast
The service industry is a major scam, really. Almost everything we're expected to pay people to do for us can be achieved by spending a little time learning to understand the subject and doing it ourselves - less, more often than not, than we spend doing something dull and repetitive at our jobs to pay for a 'specialist'. It's paying people to think, to understand our environments and daily lives for us, and a serious mind-killer.
Specialisation has it's uses, certainly, but most of the time the people we call 'experts' haven't gained these positions by spending quantities of time we could not ourselves manage learning their speciality - they got there by being in the right place at the right time to be hired or promoted, by advertising and promoting themselves, by the very illusion of personal inability they create for us by distinguishing themselves as 'the people able to do X', in implied distinction to our 'the people not able to do X'.
Anyway, what do you use to paint on human skin? I've been looking for affordable options in this practise.
im a fan of MS paint
i also do graffiti but i dont have any pictures of any piece ive done altho im sure some of the stuff ive done in LA is still there. quite a bit of my newer bits are n the dallas area now
To be honest I'd prefer it if you did. Obviously everything we post on message boards is opinion and i hate to double bandwidth with qualifiers like "imo", "perhaps" and "as far as I know". As long as a person is willing to adept and change as they go along that’s the important thing.Originally Posted by Vexbeast
No not really. appreciation is the shit on the heel of a very tall boot called understanding. When you understand something you kill it but when you "appreciate it" you haven't arrived yet.Originally Posted by Vexbeast
I like your explanation of how you create entertainment/art....that's pretty much how I'd describe it too. What type of genius are you supposed to be? I wish i was a genius, I'd love to be smarter...
I love it!!!Originally Posted by Vexbeast
That's incredibly adorable. And clever.
KilLAtomiK ... that's impressive for MS Paint.
Paint like how? For photoshoots, or do you need the paint to be flexible, in order to last a long time?Originally Posted by Raza
IF you're looking for painting for photo shoots, you might wanna take a couple bucks and go to Walmart and get the tiny acrylic bottles for around a dollar each... practice with those. THAT way you'll know more about what suits your taste.
If your looking for a stage type makeup, that will endure without cracking...
you may find Kryolan appealing. Its a bit more expensive, but its not that bad.

Lemme know what you think.
Ben Nye (the stage make-up guy) has a good line of body paints too.
Something that works for photoshoots alone would be useful; if it could last for a night of clubbing, all the better. Still, even for shoots it would need to last an hour or three, and preferably not look too plastered on. We don't have Walmarts here, but I've got a bunch of acrylic paints lying around... maybe if applied really thin that could work out.Originally Posted by OrganizedKhaos
The makeup looks good, but I'm hesitant to pay those prices for something intended to be used in small quantities around the eyes when the idea is to paint nearly full-body patterns with them.
Body paint is the obvious anwer, but also costly. I'm inclined to just use a can of spray paint and hope it inflicts as little harm on the skin as it does when I get it on me by accident.
hmmm, that doesnt sound too safe... Raza, do you have a my*space?
I've got some friends, that do that sort of thing for a living, they may be able to answer your questions.
I'd be happy to direct you.
I don't want to come off as being dumb enough to think myself infallible just because I have an opinion. That would be bad for my opinion's chances of actually being regarded with some measure of thought.Originally Posted by episode allah

Thanks! It varies. The second one, the Martyr, took only a couple of days to make but I had the head done and painted for months before his character spoke to me and I knew what he wanted to be. The first one, though, took about two and a half months. He has a much more detailed paint job, did some aditional carving on the teeth after it was fired, and he has a full jointed body and complicated mechanics to make his legs and torso move. Then I had to fabricate a stand to acomodate it. He was a doozy of construction, but is one of my favorites for motion.Originally Posted by Senior_Diablo

Whose feelings? Nobodies feelings should be taken into account! I’m not impudent enough to think that there are some people whose feelings should be taken into account instead of their actions and ideas. I maintain that each person is an artist in their own way. To be honest you're the one who seems to be categorizing people into 'stupid' & 'genius' camps. I'm just saying that relatively speaking we're all stupid so the least we can do when we try to make art is try damn hard. Art isn’t art just because people appreciate it and smart people aren’t smart just because people tell them they are. If someone wants to make art or have an opinion on art they better get off their ass and think about it a little. I M O of course....Originally Posted by Vexbeast

Boy I wish there was something called anti-art...
I don't know if I have really any favorite artisic mediums. Mostly because I'm just not really good at anything considered "Artistic"...
I Did write this little short story a while ago and I kinda liked it myself...
Darkness crept across the blue sky like smoke coming from a poker game.
The docile man sat calmly in his generic plastic chair, peering out of his dust sprayed porch. The sound of his once white, now nicotined-colored fan whirling in his ear. Slowly he reached for his habit. Pulling a plutonium stick from the cellophane covered paper box with pinpoint expertise, the man let out an almost inaudible sigh. Raising the painful luxury to his lips with one hand and quickly lightening it with the other. He took a deep drag and inhaled the toxic smog. As he breathed out the impure vapor, a faint wheeze could be heard, letting anyone close by, know that this gentle soul didn't dabble in the sport; He was quite the masterful crackerjack in the art of slow suicide.
Various beetles of different shapes and size, attracted to the mirky poison in the air, tried in vain to get through the brittle metal screens surrounding the man, to no avail. The constant tapping of their hardened bodies hitting against the metallic netting filled the air.
With his lightly yellowed fingers, the man placed his cigarette placidly into the stolen hotel ashtray.
Looking towards the blackened skies, the man thought to himself, " What is it all about?....All of it?" Puzzled by this long sought after question, the man sarcastically giggled to himself and let out a muffled answer..."Who fuckin' cares?" Surprisingly, the man's words were one hundred and ten percent correct. The truth was, his enigma would never be answered with any real validity. His response to the pondered riddle was just as good as any given answer ever surmised, since time began. The mortal soul laughed out loud, "I am now equal to all the scholars in the world". Perhaps he was.

Personally, doesn't matter a damn what anybody calls it. people make stuff, people consume stuff. Some like it, some don't. Some don't pay any attention and some sit at home and judge but don't actually indulge in any of the things for which they have an opinion. I have no opinion about sports as I don't play it or watch it. Just relax and enjoy what you like and ignore other's perceptions or judgements be they + or -. Art is not a thing in general, and if you want to find art that doesn't make you want to punch an infant you can't wait for the media to spoon fed it to you. You have to look for it.
Appreciation is a feeling.Originally Posted by episode allah

Thanks! They're good critters. I agree with a lot of what you've been saying, but I feel like your reffering to a stereotype, or several. Myself not befitting the stereotype I think I feel like I would if I was a black guy watching others debate on whether or not black people like watermellon and if they should be admonished for it if they do. That's why I haven't chimed in as much about it apart from the juice thing which has garnered less response than I thought it would. Case in point.

I mean you’d assume that if these people really were so anxious to be labeled that they’d choose a label as specific and pointed as possible whereas they seem to deliberately hide under the auspices of the ever vague ’art’ and maybe this wouldn't bother me so much if they weren't all so fucking shit or mediocre.
Why don't they just say what they are? “Hi my names John, I make sculptures out of urinals, dog hair and ground-glass”, “Hi my names mike, I play in a band”, or “Hi I'm Ed. I paint landscapes”.
So yeh, the vast majority of the time people start to call their own work art, it is stereotype to me.
I mean the general gist of opinion here seems to be that anything can be art. But that’s what you were getting at with the 'juice' thing. I'm with you on that because you're basically saying that there’s a pool of creativity in every person which finds different outlets in different activities and some people need to dispose of it more frequently and some people less frequently but nevertheless, it is the same material.
